Unfortunately, crime is still rampant in San Francisco...yet people focus on news like this? Wow! Has he even been proven guilty or are you rushing to judgement (perhaps he is simply doing his job....i know several officers (no SF) that say they would avoid "situations" where there could be perspection that they did something wrong! Can you imagine that?!!? Soft police officers letting crime go? Shouldn't that be the focus? Of the 57 uses of force and the 31 injured citizens, how many were the RESULT of the "citizen/criminal" doing something illegal. Perhaps if "citizen/criminal" wasn't the CAUSE, this officer wouldn't have to use force. I'm cool with calling this guy an asshole and getting him off the street - becuase I don't live in SF. However, if you focus on this nonsense...crime will continue. Up to you. Good luck!

I'm not a big fan of US interventionism around the globe, and private contractors are little more than glorified mercenaries in my opinion. However, when I find an outstanding educational graphic such as the one by Omnivore that accompanied Stanger's NYT opinion piece, I feel obligated to include the opinion as well, to provide context for the graphic. Needless to say, I don't think much of Stanger's view that military "outsourcing is in part a rational response to the new possibilities of the information age" and that the "challenge will be to manage creative forms of collaboration between government and the private sector in ways that serve the public interest."
